Voyeur and Vanity Series
Voyeur and Vanity is a series of painting which represents a concentrated effort to create successful figurative paintings by working from life. For years I had relied upon photographs as the visual source for figurative compositions. When I began working from life, I was surprised to discover that my drawing ability was not as highly developed as I thought. This series enabled me to achieve a level of competence in drawing and painting the figure which I had long desired but could not achieve. The study was not restricted to anatomy but included an extensive investigation of clothing and accouterments. Since such items are often associated with a persons vanity and sometimes included what is called intimate apparel, I must accept the prospect of appearing to be a voyeur. Perhaps that is really what an artist is.
