The Sixties
OIL PAINTINGS, WATER COLORS, AND DRAWINGS BY GERALD KING

THE SIXTIES

These were fun days. I was working for Banta Printing and spending evenings and weekends trying to catch up on the type of painting I had to forgo while attending collage. I wasn't really free from abstraction and the doctrine of shock art expected by the high brow art establishment, but I could now stick out my tongue and revert to my fantasy art. I called it Romantic Realism. As I look back it was really a form of Impressionism/Expressionism with romantic subject matter. This stuff would not get me into graduate school or later teaching in a college or university. It did give me a taste of what art could be and  the power to survive as an real artist in the last half of the 20th Century.

DRAWINGS

During the 1960s I lived in Appleton, Wisconsin
and would frequently sketch and draw with my
friends. Favorite spots included  old farms and the
banks of Lake Michigan. I've put up a few of the
drawings (below)  I did on some of those sketching
    trips.
The usual drawing tool in those days was the
felt pen.  I sold most of the drawings from that period
and if exposed to daylight they have already faded
to a great degree. Sorry about that.
