Copying/Replicas

The practice of
copying the works of the great painters of the past is a time honored endeavor
which enlightens and enriches the artist and facilitates the production of
quality paintings. The best copies or replicas are made from direct observation
of the original paintings. For years Gerald King has participated in the copyist
program of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Working from
direct observation of original art has enabled him to capture the subtlest
colors and the finest details in his copies. Unlike regular reproductions that are mechanically produced, these
works bare the unique imprint of a skilled artist's hand and are real oil paintings. They are not merely
copies but accurately painted replicas and can be signed by the copyist as his original work. To give credit to
the artist whose work is copied and impede its use as a forgery, the copyist will write on the work "Copy
after... (the original artist name or copied signature) followed by his own signature. The work
in progress above was signed--
"Copy After Rubens" by Gerald King"
