| All artists today are self made. If they are lucky, they teach themselves how to draw. Unlike Picasso and most of the artists born in the 19th century, learning to draw is left up to the individual. If a person shows artistic talent (drawing ability) at an early age, they are either discouraged by their parents from using it lest they pursue a career in art or they are left to their own devices with the expectation that they will get better with age. My father, was an artist. He passed away when I was twelve years old. I was encourage to become an artist, but there were few people who could help me with my drawing skills. Eight years of art in the University, a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Fine Arts degrees empowered me to call myself an artist despite the fact that my drawing skills were not well developed beyond my teenage years. It took me a long time to teach myself how to draw.. This is the story of my life. How I overcame the tyranny of modernism, learned to draw, and became an artist despite the circumstances which prevailed in my time. I will let my work tell the story. Gerald King |
