Revisiting the Seascape Series By Gerald King
During my long life as an artist I often rebelled against the established
beliefs about what is worthy art and what is gratuitous pandering to a myopic
art establishment. After graduating from college in 1963, I quietly
rebelled against my art school by doing a series of paintings of square rigged
sailing ships, 19th century seascapes, romantic harbor scenes and other bits of
nostalgia. I called this approach to art - Romantic Realism. Though successful
with the non-indoctrinated public who actually purchased my work, the
entrenched art intellectuals who dominated most traditional art institutions
ignored my protest and labeled me a troglodyte.
Now in my 70s, I revisit this theme, and I feel at home.
