#154 Title of work: "Pencil Sharpener" 1968-9 Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 40" x 30" Artist Collection
|

It all started when I picked up my old pencil sharpener and drew it out on my canvas. As can be expected I was all over the map on this project. I was searching for something that would impress or at least interest my professor. I was trying to get into graduate school, but all of my work was too traditional which was actually held against me as being an acceptable candidate for this progressive art program. After some weeks taking a summer school graduate art class, I was desperate to switch from the art education program that had accepted me, to a fine arts program leading to the coveted MFA degree. I had given up a good highschool teaching job and moved with family and pets to Madison, Wisconsin where I decided to earn a degree which would enable me to teach in a University or College. But they did not accept me with open arms and I had to struggle to make myself an acceptable candidate. So I decided to sharpen my pencil and try again.
Strangely enough it worked and I succeeded in switching into the program. I'd be happy to tell anyone who wishes what it was that made this work so impressive to the eyes of the avante guard. You have but to ask.
