KOTOBUKI KAI IS A JAPANESE DANCE GROUP PRACTICING THE ART OF NIHON BUYO. ITS PRINCIPLE DANCER, CHOREOGRAPHER AND SENSE IS YOKO HARADA KING. GERALD KING IS THE PRESIDENT OF KOTOBUKI KAI, INC.  HE IS THE PRODUCER,  TECHNICAL DIRECTOR, AND SCENENIC DESIGNER FOR ALL STAGE PRODUCTIONS.

Kotobuki Kai                     

 
Kotobuki Kai was founded in 1972 by Yoko and Gerald King to produce performances of Japanese Dance. It is the only company producing fully staged performances of Nihon buyo on the east coast, complete with elegant costumes, authentic scenic design, traditional-modern music and a handmade resonant wood floor. The company produces and tours with original, full length productions as well as many smaller, more informal performances for colleges, festivals, conferences and public areas. Kotobuki Kai also presents lecture/demonstrations, master classes and workshops in Japanese Dance and Culture for schools and organizations.

Yoko Harada King
   Yoko Harada King, artistic director, choreographer and principal  artist is a native of Chiba City, Japan. She received her professional name and teacher’s degree from the Azuma Kabuki School in Tokyo and has been performing for more than 60 years. Co-founder and artistic director of Kotobuki Kai since 1970, she has served on the faculties of George Mason University and the University of Maryland and teaches private students in her Riverdale Park, Maryland studio. She has been honored by several choreographic grants by the Prince George’s Arts Council. Critical acclaim has followed her dancing since her arrival to the United States in 1958.

During the late 1980s Gerald King did a series of painting of Japanese Dance.
   Some of these works came from direct contact with the dancers.
