2007

In my quest for new adventures, I sometimes feel I have been here before. During my trip to Florence in 2005 I had  just such a feeling. The subsequent series of paintings about Florence brought back an experience I had in 1955.  I was 18 years old working for the summer as a dishwasher in a hospital. I had just graduated high school and was looking forward to college. During my lunch break I made an imaginary drawing that I called "Elysium 55" Drawing was always a way of fantasizing, and I conjured up a scene of an ancient city on a river . It is strange that 50 years would pass before I visited such a place. And when I did my series of paintings about Florence, I used the same imagination to portray not what I saw, but how I wanted it to be.

 My Portrait Project

Perhaps it is a little late in my life to take on another
challenge- portraiture. The opportunity came when I had a problem paying for models for a weekly class in my studio. It has never been a large class and frequently I would actually lose money paying for models. So, I offered a FREE portrait to anyone who would model for five consecutive classes. This not only saved me money, but gave me the opportunity to really concentrate on portraiture.
I have taken on portrait commissions in the past and found the experience totally depressing. My problem was that I never wanted to work from photographs, and my clients, who felt they were doing me a favor, expected a photographic likeness. Now that I have the ability to get a likeness and pull off a successful portrait, I have no reputation for this specialty and cannot get clients willing to pay for my work. It's okay, for I really do not want to become a specialist. I want to be an artist.

The Shrine of the Immaculate Conception

This is the second time I have gone into a religious building and found and exciting source of images to create a new art. It has become obvious to me that I am deeply taken not only with the beauty of the architecture, but with the art and artifacts that adorn the space. By manipulating the art and the space and creating new esthetic relationships I am able to produce works which are more than mere pictures of the churches interior, but settings for religious activities.

The FIRST WORK in this new series depicts the upper church of the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception with a copy of Murillo's "Immaculate Conception". The title of the work is " The Year of the Eucharist in the Shrine of The Immaculate Conception"
