Appleton Senior High School -Class of 1955

Paintings and Drawings by Gerald King

I believe the theme song for our prom in 1955 was, We will have these "Moments to Remember"  My memory has always been rather poor, but some things come back when I review my paintings  The above work, which has some serious water damage, was done when I was a senior at AHS. I call it "Between Classes". I will admit now that I was not pleased with the figures in this oil painting, but then I had not learned my art in an art academy as were Picasso and most artists of prior centuries.  Besides that, I think the work speaks plainly about the Appleton Sr. High School in 1955.  You may not recognize anyone from the faces, but the cloths and actions can be  read.   I'm sure I had real people in mind when I painted this.  If it were a bit shorter, I would guess that was me in the center- alone, slouched over with hands in the pockets.  Of  course that could have been a lot of kids in that class.

The works below are only a few of the many paintings and drawings I did while attending AHS. I don't have many significant photographs.     Gerald King

Remember The Talisman.  I saved most of the 1955 issues. I also have a few 1954 issues. Here is one with me in it.

Unknown to me at the time, my attempts at drawing from actual locations about town were the healthiest artistic exercises I would have.  I have found that it is this practice which best serves an artist in developing his creative potential and an empathy towards the world about him. It is a long explanation, which I will not present in this venue. Just know that it was by drawing the sites and people in Appleton, or whereever I have been, that allowes me to see and appreciate the unique beauty of reality.
