Though I have no particular procedure or plan for executing a copy, I began this work by sketching the image out with oil washes. The washes were achieved by diluting the oil paint with turpentine. This method allows  for easy adjustments and corrections by  merely wiping away the unset painted lines or areas of value. I have often used this sketching method with figurative works that require more precise proportioning of an image to the canvas which is smaller than the original.

2nd day

On the second day, the washes are set and cannot be easily removed. At this point I use opaque white to cover lines  and edges and to adjust values.   The enlarged image (click on image) shows how white has been used for this purpose.  At this point I have approximatly fine or six hours into the work.
I will continue with this method until I have a satisfying drawing

3rd day

On the third day I continued to sketch the figure with oil washes. I added some color to local areas. I also added a tonal wash in the negative area. I used titanium white as an opacifier to lighten some colors.
